Antigonick is an experimental translation/adaptation of Sophocles’ Antigone by Anne Carson. I produced and directed this radio play for The Organist Podcast, hosted by KCRW. The entire episode is here: https://www.kcrw.com/news-culture/shows/the-organist/antigonick

With this audio adaptation, I wanted to stay as true to the contemporary feeling of the text as I could. The play is Antigonick in full, including Anne Carson’s letter The Task of the Translator of Antigone that she reads when she stages the work.

Antigonick is much more than just a direct translation of Sophocles’ Antigone. Although Carson pays very close attention to the original Greek, in Antigonick, she also creates a strange new world. She somehow takes the original Sophoclean play, along with its reception history from Hegel, to Beckett, to Butler and compresses thousands of years down into a few dozen pages.

Just before the play begins, Antigone’s two brothers have killed each other, one was fighting for the state and one was fighting against the state. The king, Kreon, makes a law that you can’t bury a traitor of the state and this sets up the tension of the play because it’s necessary for Antigone to bury her brother according to the gods of her house -- if she doesn’t her family’s life will be in danger. Antigone is engaged to Kreon’s son Haimon. She defies Kreon’s law, buries her brother and as a result she is sentenced to death by Kreon.

Her Speech

Cast list:
Victoria Marino, an incredible and positive force of nature, tried to get her life back after the removal of a brain tumor. She wanted people to hear her story.

This is part of a larger group of portraits called Squirrels Stories. A linguist told me "squirrels" is the hardest word to say in the English language. Squirrels Stories is the place for things that are difficult to talk about. We are all dealing with cancer in one way or another, but are terrible at talking about it. This project was an attempt to start a conversation.

Information on you and/or your company:
I have spent the last two decades working with storytelling in one way or another including sassily doing continuity for Muppets, editing video art and documentaries, and founding a video collective.
