Judith on The Veldt
Making The Veldt was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in audio
drama. Sometimes there is just serendipity in the process. This was my first time
working with Mike Walker who has written and adapted plays for the BBC for
years and probably is the most renowned audio playwright in the UK today.
The casting came together easily and working with child actors, which is often
considered a trial, was a breeze as these kids really bought into the script and
enjoyed being little terrors. I improvised a lot with them and I knew that was
something that Mike Walker would be happy with.
The only hurdle was getting Ray Bradbury’s approval. I was very nervous when I
called him at his home.
Me: Mr. Bradbury sir…
Me: I would like to update your story The Veldt sir for BBC radio.
RB: What? What?
RB: Yes Yes. I know how to spell it!
After that it was plain sailing. He gave the project his blessing.
The show was chosen in a Christmas program that the BBC always produces
called Pick of the Year. The host said listening to The Veldt was ‘the aural
equivalent of hiding under the sofa”. I doubt the late great Mr. Bradbury heard it.
It’s just one of many interpretations of this prescient story about absentee
parents who leave their kids in the care of technology. The consequences are not
exactly efficacious. In this time of tele - learning – it might be a wake up call. Yes
tech is a wonderful tool (as the existence of this conference testifies) but the tech
must be under our control and not take over!
