Together, they will lead the series of classes beginning on Thursday, June 8th, 2017, that will create daily podcasts from the Festival.
Throughout the Festival weekend they will be joined by writer Brian Price (Great Northern Audio Theatre), Sound Effects Artist Tony Brewer, Voice Actor Bob Kaliban, and others as they create daily podcasts from the class based on a new original work of audio fiction.

ABOUT JADE CITY PHARAOH:
The Jade City Pharaoh is an audio drama series based on a stage production written by Howard Craft in Durham, North Carolina. It is a super-hero adventure featuring Herald M.F. Jones AKA The Jade City Pharaoh.

Each episode runs four to five minutes and stands alone as a story. But the series is sequenced with recurring characters and featured villains. Brief summaries at the start of each episode give listeners the backstory they need.

The Jade City Pharaoh airs on Public Radio Station WUNC.  Herald Jones is radio’s first African American superhero to have a series.

These are fast-paced dramas with a Hip Hop aesthetic that creates a 21st Century audio theater experience.  Producer Frank Stasio says the artistic goal of the series is “to move sound at the speed of light.”

Frank Stasio on "Sound As a Verb"

One of the keys to making good audio drama, or audio fiction, is to use sound as a verb.

Too often producers think of sound only as an adjective. Think about those crickets we hear in the background during a moonlight stroll. They describe the scene, like and adjective,  but they don’t advance the action. OK, go ahead and use the crickets. It will keep your listener placed in time.

But think about using sound as a verb as often as possible. Let it move your listener from one location to another. Let a jet take your hero to Paris. Make a "thump" knock over a villain, or a kiss and the rustle of fabric take your subjects to bed. Using wordless sound to create action activates a kind of "chase" instinct in listeners that commits them to following the story through all of its twists and turns.     FS
